In partnership with our friends at INNOVO
goop’s senior VP of brand partnerships, Wendy Lauria, likes running. Turns out running and trying to stay hydrated can be challenging for the bladder. More than one in three women of all ages suffer from stress urinary incontinence (SUI), which is when urine leakage is caused by sudden pressure on the bladder, such as when coughing, sneezing, or playing impact sports. Lauria had tried Kegel exercises, the recommended therapy to strengthen pelvic floor muscles, but was never sure that she was doing them correctly, and they didn’t seem to help. An acquaintance suggested that she try the INNOVO device, which resonated with her: “I’m a big gadget girl. If there’s a gadget that can fix something, I’m all for it.”
INNOVO, which is FDA-cleared, was invented to help people exercise pelvic floor muscles correctly, noninvasively, and at home. A thirty-minute session provides 180 perfect Kegels. As demonstrated in clinical research, within twelve weeks of using INNOVO five times a week, women with SUI were dry or experienced significantly less leakage.
Lauria told us about her own experience with INNOVO and how it’s become a part of her (admirable) wellness routine.
ALL THE LIQUIDS

I think I had a pretty nice wellness routine even before adding in INNOVO. I do a smoothie every morning, usually with spinach, banana, frozen strawberries, almond milk, and, lately, the new Metabolism-Boosting Superpowder. And I’m a big fan of High School Genes—again, because my metabolism is something I’m interested in supporting.

I grab GOOPGLOW Morning Superpowder out of the pantry in the morning (or G.Tox Detoxifying Superpowder or GOOPGENES Collagen Superpowder). I drink a lot of liquids during the day; I’m always trying to hydrate. And that, with the running, is a recipe for leakage.

MOVEMENT
I’m a big runner, which is where I think my incontinence comes from. I adopted my son, so while I am a mother, I did not give birth. I’ve been a runner since high school. I feel like my incontinence probably started when I was in my early thirties, and since then it has been increasingly pronounced.
I’ve been doing Pilates online during the pandemic. I use Forma, an online subscription series, and I also like Fluidform. I use a ring-shaped weight, a ball, resistance bands, and ankle or wrist weights. And, of course, a nice cushiony yoga mat.
THE GAME CHANGER

I enjoy those exercises and moving, but nothing has ever worked consistently for incontinence for me. I’ve tried to do Kegel exercises before, but it’s hard for me to know whether I’m doing them correctly, and I don’t think I ever saw any pronounced improvement, so I never stuck with them. Since starting with INNOVO, though, I have definitely seen an improvement. INNOVO feels like it’s giving me good Kegels. It takes the guesswork out. I don’t have to worry about whether I’m doing them wrong.
I’m only five weeks in, and when I’ve run, I’ve had a noticeable improvement as far as leakage. Sometimes I leak when I sneeze, and the other day, I had three or four sneezes without leaking—I was pleasantly surprised. So I will stick with it.

I’ve been doing my INNOVO routine at night. After I put my son to bed, I throw on the shorts. I usually do the lying-down position—I find that more comfortable—although you can also do it standing. It’s easy: You put the shorts on and it works. I lie down on the bed and use it for thirty minutes. It has a timer and shuts off automatically. It will beep and tell you if the position needs to be adjusted.
The sensation feels like Kegels, but a little out-of-body—really interesting. I find it relaxing, like a little massage of sorts. I usually read email, scroll Instagram, talk on the phone, or read The New York Times. Sometimes I’ll put on a guided meditation and listen to that. It’s a nice thirty-minute break.
In the United States, INNOVO is FDA-cleared for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence.
