Rachel Zegler Sings “Tonight” as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ Trailer

Something’s coming, though the jury’s still out on whether that something’s good. Stephen Spielberg’s highly anticipated West Side Story adaptation is finally hurtling toward its December release date, and the new trailer—unveiled first on Good Morning America today—promises a show-stopping performance from up-and-comer Rachel Zegler as Maria. It also hints at a careful treatment of co-star Ansel Elgort, who has maintained a low profile after facing (and denying) accusations that he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old.

Based on the 1957 Broadway musical that positioned the Puerto Rican Sharks against rival white gang the Jets, Spielberg’s West Side Story was filmed primarily in Harlem and wrapped in September 2019, only to be delayed release due to the pandemic. The cast includes multiple Hollywood and Broadway heavy-hitters, such as Ariana DeBose (Hamilton, The Prom) as Anita, David Alvarez (Billy Elliot: The Musical) as Bernardo, and Josh Andrés Rivera (Hamilton) as Chino. In addition, Dance Moms alumna Maddie Ziegler will play Velma, a member of the Jets, and Mike Faist (Dear Evan Hansen, Newsies) will play Riff.

The short video, which features Zegler singing a few notes from “Tonight,” is a whirlwind of color and costuming, throwing in sneak peeks of some of the original’s most iconic moments: The dance hall where Tony and Maria first meet; the rumble between the Sharks and Jets; and the dress shop where Maria sings “I Feel Pretty.” We also get out first glimpse of Rita Moreno, who played Anita in the 1961 film adaptation.

West Side Story is out December 10. Watch the full trailer below
